Borabanda couple saves seven-year-old girl from sexual assault, suspect arrested

A couple rescued a seven-year-old girl from an attempted sexual assault by a 60-year-old autorickshaw driver in the Borabanda area of Hyderabad. Following the rescue, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar publicly felicitated the couple, identified as K. Ramesh and Mavulamma, on Saturday for their timely intervention, courage, and presence of mind.

According to the Hyderabad police, the incident occurred when the accused autorickshaw driver allegedly lured the young girl by offering her Rs 20 while she was playing on the road. The suspect then took the child inside his autorickshaw, which was parked in an isolated area.

Ramesh and Mavulamma noticed the suspicious behaviour of the driver and intervened immediately, rescuing the young girl safely. The couple then overpowered the 60-year-old accused to prevent him from fleeing.

They alerted the police by calling the Dial 100 emergency helpline, following which personnel from the Borabanda police station quickly arrived at the scene. The couple then handed the suspect over to the responding officers.

The rescued girl was shifted to a hospital for a medical examination. Meanwhile, the accused was taken into custody by the Borabanda police. He was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and was subsequently formally arrested.

To recognize their brave actions, Police Commissioner Sajjanar hosted a felicitation for Ramesh and Mavulamma on Saturday. During the event, the Commissioner emphasized that public alertness is crucial to preventing such crimes.

Sajjanar stated that to curb such offences, public alertness is as important as police vigilance. He urged every citizen to act with social responsibility and stay aware of their surroundings, advising people to immediately alert the police by calling Dial 100 if they notice suspicious individuals or unusual activities. He added that the exemplary courage and presence of mind shown by Ramesh and Mavulamma in saving the young girl serves as an inspiration to everyone.
