BJP to Contest Hyderabad GHMC Elections Alone Says Ramchander Rao

Telangana BJP chief N Ramchander Rao announced on Thursday in Hyderabad that the party plans to contest the upcoming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections alone. Speaking at a "Meet the Press" event, Rao clarified that the state unit will contest the municipal polls separately, leaving any final decision regarding electoral alliances to the BJP's national leadership.
The announcement, made during a program organized to commemorate 12 years of Telangana's formation, establishes the party's independent stance for the local municipal elections. Rao addressed the local political scenario and the state unit's strategy moving forward.
The statement holds political significance following recent developments involving Pawan Kalyan's Janasena party. The Janasena chief had recently held a press conference in Hyderabad to announce his party’s re-entry into Telangana, specifically to contest the upcoming GHMC elections. At the time, the Janasena leader had expressed uncertainty regarding whether their NDA partner, the BJP, would join them in the contest.
Addressing the relationship with Janasena, Rao acknowledged that Pawan Kalyan's party is an alliance partner under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the national level. However, he emphasized that local dynamics differ across regions.
"Pawan Kalyan’s Janasena is an NDA partner, but each state has its own political scenario," Rao said during the press meet.
Rao further explained that any decisions regarding coalitions or joint contests would not be made at the state level. Instead, the power to finalize alliances remains with the BJP national-level leadership.
When asked about long-term political plans, the state BJP chief noted that the 2029 assembly elections are still far away. He reiterated that the national party retains the authority to decide on all future alliances.
