Bhatti Vikramarka Launches Federation of Press Clubs in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD — Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka formally launched the Federation of Press Clubs in Hyderabad on Saturday, emphasizing that a free and credible press is essential for the survival of democracy.

Addressing the gathering, Bhatti Vikramarka stated that governments must possess the courage to accept criticism. He emphasized that journalism should not merely report events but actively question discrimination and explore their deeper societal implications.

The newly formed Federation includes representatives from eight Press Clubs across the country. During his address, the Deputy Chief Minister highlighted that while social media has broadened freedom of expression, it should not lead to irresponsibility. In an era where technologies such as artificial intelligence and voice cloning facilitate the rapid spread of misinformation, he noted that a journalist's primary asset remains credibility.

Bhatti Vikramarka called on the Federation to evolve into a protective institution focused on journalist safety, dignity, and welfare, particularly for media personnel working in districts and smaller towns. He also addressed the pending land allotment proposal for the Press Club of Hyderabad, assuring that the State government is examining the matter and will consider it positively.

Speaking at the event, N. Ram, Director of The Hindu Group and former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, welcomed the formation of the Federation and urged it to document attacks on journalists and provide legal support. Expressing concern over criminal prosecutions, raids, and internet shutdowns affecting media professionals, Ram emphasized the necessity of collectivisation among press bodies.

Other key speakers at the event included Press Club of India president Sangeeta Pisharody, The Caravan Editor Anant Nath, Federation of Press Clubs representative Gautam Lahiri, and Press Club of Hyderabad president Vijay Kumar Reddy.
