Azmatullah Omarzai Reprimanded by ICC During Second ODI Against Ireland

Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai has received an official reprimand and one demerit point from the International Cricket Council (ICC) after being found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second One Day International (ODI) match against Ireland in Bready. The disciplinary action was taken following an incident that took place on Friday during the match.

According to details released by ICCmedia, Azmatullah was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support personnel. This specific section of the code relates to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.

As a result of the breach, one demerit point has been formally added to Azmatullah’s disciplinary record. Disciplinary records indicate that this was the Afghan all-rounder's first offence within a 24-month period.

The incident that led to the reprimand occurred during the 41st over of Afghanistan’s innings in the match against Ireland. After being given out by the umpire, Azmatullah remained at the crease for a prolonged period of time and gestured his displeasure at the umpire's decision.

Following the match, Azmatullah admitted the offence and accepted the sanction that was proposed by Dean Cosker of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Since the player admitted to the violation and accepted the proposed penalty, there was no need for match authorities to conduct a formal hearing into the matter.

The formal charge against the cricketer was levelled by the match officiating team. The team of officials consisted of on-field umpires Gareth Morrison and Roly Black, along with third umpire Johnny Kennedy and fourth umpire George Brolly.

Under the regulations governing international matches, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, while the maximum penalty involves a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player’s match fee. Additionally, Level 1 violations carry one or two demerit points that are recorded against the player.
