Australia's Monash University Invites SCCL to Explore Critical Minerals

Australia's Monash University has invited the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) to explore a partnership in the critical minerals sector, citing Australia's extensive reserves and rising global demand for these resources.

A delegation from Monash University met SCCL Chairman and Managing Director Dr Buddaprakash Jyoti at Singareni Bhavan in Hyderabad on Monday evening to discuss potential collaboration. During the meeting, the delegation briefed company officials on opportunities spanning the exploration, extraction, processing, and refining of critical minerals.

According to a media release, the university stated it could provide technical expertise in advanced, environmentally sustainable mining practices, as well as support in turning academic research into commercially viable technologies.

The visiting delegates emphasized the importance of moving beyond the extraction of raw minerals to create additional economic value through downstream processing and refining. They proposed that SCCL leverage Monash University’s capabilities in sustainable mining methods, mine closure planning, advanced operational technologies, and workforce skill development.

SCCL officials outlined the state-owned miner's current strategy to expand into the critical minerals domain, highlighting that the company has recently commenced exploration of gold and copper deposits in Karnataka.

Dr Buddaprakash stated that SCCL is actively examining global opportunities within the critical minerals sector. He noted that the company would explore avenues of cooperation with Monash University in research, technology adoption, and specialized skill development. He also announced that a high-level Singareni team will soon visit Australia to conduct a detailed study of the opportunities.

The discussions included Monash University Dean of Engineering Professor Yiannis Ventikos along with other members of the visiting delegation and senior SCCL officials.
