Apollo Hospitals Secunderabad Doctors Treat Achalasia Cardia Patients Using POEM

Medical gastroenterologists at Apollo Hospitals in Secunderabad have successfully treated two patients suffering from Achalasia Cardia, a rare and debilitating swallowing disorder, using an advanced endoscopic procedure. The successful treatments, which provided the patients with long-term relief without the need for external incisions, were announced on July 14, 2026.

The medical team at the hospital, led by medical gastroenterologists Dr. Bhaskar and Dr. Venu Gongati, utilized a minimally invasive technique called Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy, commonly known as POEM. Achalasia Cardia is a rare condition in which the nerves controlling the food pipe, or esophagus, fail to function properly. This nerve failure leads to severe difficulty in swallowing and causes further digestive complications for those affected.

Among the patients treated was a 37-year-old woman from Warangal who had been suffering from severe swallowing difficulties for a decade. Following the POEM procedure at the Secunderabad facility, the patient experienced remarkable relief from her symptoms and is recovering well, according to the treating doctors.

The endoscopic procedure also offered a successful treatment and recovery path for a second patient, identified as 50-year-old Ravinder from Karimnagar. Ravinder had been diagnosed with Achalasia Cardia alongside cardiomyopathy and a severely reduced ejection fraction of 30 percent, which presented additional medical challenges.

Dr. Bhaskar and Dr. Venu Gongati noted that surgery has traditionally been the standard treatment for patients suffering from Achalasia Cardia. However, the advanced POEM procedure is performed entirely through an endoscope. Because this modern technique requires no external incisions, it enables patients to recover quickly and return home the very next day.
