Annu Kapoor Discusses New Film Uttar Da Puttar and Career Journey in Hyderabad

Veteran actor Annu Kapoor discussed his role in the film Uttar Da Puttar and reflected on his four-decade-long career during an interview in Hyderabad. The film, which explores the conflict between scientific reasoning and superstition, stars Kapoor as a physics professor who is simultaneously obsessed with mystical beliefs.

Produced by Sandiip Kapur and directed by Ravinder Siwach, Uttar Da Puttar features Kapoor playing the head of a coaching centre. Despite being a respected professor of physics, his character is deeply fixated on vastu, numerology, and the north direction. The film’s title translates to 'the son of the north,' drawing on the double meaning of the Hindi word 'uttar,' which represents both 'answer' and 'north.'

Kapoor shared that he was drawn to the role due to its inherent contradictions and complexities. Over his 44-year acting career, the veteran performer noted that while he has occasionally accepted roles for financial survival, his primary preference has always been to engage with meaningful content and strong subjects.

He highlighted some of his most memorable career milestones, including playing the character of Kabir on television nearly 40 years ago, hosting the musical show Antakshari, and his latest performance in Uttar Da Puttar.

Kapoor also recalled his previous work in the Telugu film industry, specifically his role in Rules Ranjann. Directed by Rathinam Krishna, the film was shot in Hyderabad approximately two to three years ago. Kapoor admitted he is not highly familiar with the southern film industry but welcomed the opportunity.

Reflecting on the broader nature of his craft, Kapoor described cinema as the art form that represents reality most closely. He also cautioned against equating commercial success with talent, noting that box-office hits and wealth are not true indicators of an artist's capability.
