Alwal Police arrest three for cheating 100 families with fake housing scheme

The Alwal Police in Hyderabad have arrested three individuals for allegedly cheating nearly 100 economically weaker families by promising them allotments under the state government's double-bedroom housing scheme. The suspects allegedly defrauded the victims over a period of nearly three years by issuing forged allotment certificates before their activities were halted.

The arrests, reported on June 25, 2026, came after the victims finally discovered they had been duped. The Alwal Police identified the arrested individuals as T Gopinath Pushpalatha, her son T Gopinath Vishal, and Mahender Singh. According to investigators, Mahender Singh runs a photocopying centre in the nearby Trimulgherry locality and played a key role in preparing and printing the forged housing allotment documents.

Police investigations revealed that the suspects targeted economically weaker families, collecting sums ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh from each victim. The accused claimed they possessed official contacts within the government that would allow them to secure housing allotments under the double-bedroom scheme.

To convince the victims of their legitimacy, the group issued forged allotment certificates. Trusting these documents, the victim families waited for nearly three years, expecting to receive their promised homes. The fraud finally came to light when the families realized the certificates were fake and reported the matter.

Following the arrests, the Alwal Police seized 79 fake double-bedroom allotment certificates and three mobile phones from the possession of the accused. The three arrested suspects have since been remanded to judicial custody as legal proceedings begin.

The police also disclosed that the alleged mastermind of the entire scam, identified as Jayaraj Gangadharan, is currently absconding. Along with Gangadharan, three other suspects linked to the fraud remain at large. The Alwal Police stated that efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects.
