AIMIM Expels MLC Mirza Rahmath Baig Amid Video Controversy

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in Hyderabad has expelled Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Mirza Rahmath Baig from the party and directed him to resign from his legislative position following a controversy surrounding an alleged sexual misconduct video.
The disciplinary action came after a video circulated on social media platforms. Baig denied the allegations, stating that the clip was morphed or generated using artificial intelligence. He subsequently approached the Cybercrime Police, alleging that unidentified individuals were attempting to threaten and blackmail him using the purported footage.
Baig's expulsion marks a sharp turnaround in a political career that began at the grassroots level. Also known as Mirza Rahmath Baig Quadri, he initially worked as a driver for the late Syed Sajjad, who represented the Karwan Assembly constituency, and later worked alongside prominent party leader Ahmed Pasha Quadri.
Over the years, Baig earned broader organizational roles within the party. He served as the party in-charge for the Rajendranagar Assembly constituency and later handled party responsibilities in Goshamahal. His proximity to AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi and floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi established him as an important organizational figure.
His first major electoral contest occurred during the 2018 Telangana Assembly elections, when AIMIM fielded him in Rajendranagar. Baig finished third in that contest after securing 46,547 votes. In 2023, the party selected him as its candidate for the Hyderabad Local Authorities’ Constituency in the Legislative Council.
The AIMIM leadership announced his expulsion from the party without providing a specific stated reason, while calling for his formal resignation from the MLC seat.
