AIG Hospitals Performs Complex Skull-to-Spine Tumour Surgery

Surgeons at AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad have successfully conducted a complex skull-to-spine tumour surgery using a combination of Augmented Reality/Mixed Reality (AR/MR) headsets and a robotic exoscope. Led by Dr. Abhirama Chandra Gabbita, the procedure marks the first time this surgical approach has been executed in the Telugu-speaking states.
During the milestone operation, the surgical team utilised AR/MR glasses to establish an environment where digital anatomical maps co-existed with the physical workspace in real time. Instead of looking away from the patient to check traditional monitors, the surgeons had 3D anatomical imaging projected directly into their line of sight, allowing them to navigate high-risk areas with improved visual clarity.
The surgeons also deployed a robotic exoscope that functioned as an advanced eye during the operation. The equipment delivered magnified, crystal-clear video of deep neural pathways within a high-risk operating corridor, providing microscopic views of hard-to-reach locations.
Dr. Subodh Raju, Director of Neurosurgery, and Dr. Abhirama noted that such procedures represent the future direction of operation theatres. They explained that rather than relying on guesswork or bulky screens, the technology allows doctors to see right through tissue while relying on the robotic camera for precise visuals, enhancing surgical clarity without replacing the doctor's steady hand.
