AIFF evaluates 31 elite football referee assessors in Gwalior for 2026-27 season

In a report from Hyderabad, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) conducted its Elite Referee Assessor and Referee Instructor Evaluation Programme at the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior from June 28 to July 1, 2026. The programme was held to prepare match officials, assessors, and instructors for the upcoming 2026-27 domestic football season.
The intensive four-day programme brought together 31 participants, including 28 men and three women, selected from the Indian Super League (ISL) and Indian Football League (IFL) referee assessor panels. The evaluation aimed to enhance the overall quality, consistency, and standards of officiating across Indian football.
The sessions were led by a panel of international and national experts. This included FIFA and AFC Referee Instructor Ismail Adnan Alhafi from Jordan, Referee Assessor Manager Anthony John D’Costa, and AFC Referee Instructors Maria Rebello and Baskar Purushothaman.
Throughout the four days, the participants underwent a comprehensive evaluation process. They were assessed on their knowledge and application of the Laws of the Game, including the latest amendments, as well as video analysis and incident interpretation.
Other key areas of evaluation included presentation and communication skills, English proficiency, incident reporting, and the recognition and handling of Key Match Incidents (KMIs). Participants were also tested on match assessment, grading, and the preparation and delivery of referee debriefs.
According to the AIFF, this evaluation programme is part of its annual preparations to ensure that referee assessors and instructors remain aligned with the latest FIFA and AFC standards and methodologies. By strengthening the capabilities of those who evaluate and mentor match officials, the federation aims to raise refereeing standards across national competitions.
The event marks the beginning of the AIFF's preparations for the 2026-27 season. A comprehensive series of further evaluation programmes and fitness tests for referees and match officials are scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.
