Agriculture Commission Submits Minor Irrigation Report to CM Revanth Reddy

Hyderabad: The Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission has submitted a report on minor irrigation to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, recommending key structural reforms to manage water resources.

In its submission to the government, the commission recommended re-establishing a separate minor irrigation system equipped with technical units to increase overall water use efficiency across Telangana.

The commission suggested setting up command area-based management systems to establish vital links between small and large irrigation sources. To safeguard local water bodies, the panel advised formulating a special minor irrigation law dedicated to the conservation of ponds.

Under these recommendations, the commission stressed that full tank level (FTL) boundaries of ponds should be identified immediately. It urged the government to remove existing encroachments and secure the water bodies from future encroachment.

The commission noted that restoring ponds is essential for ensuring water security, stabilizing agricultural activity, and boosting rural livelihoods in the state.

Responding to the report, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy suggested that the commission also focus on key farming initiatives, including crop rotation practices, expanding the cultivation of horticultural crops, and setting up Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs).

During the meeting, the commission team briefed the Chief Minister on the various programs and initiatives it has undertaken over the past two years, along with the policy recommendations provided to the administration. The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the commission's work and performance.
