Abdul Muqeet Chanda commits Rs 50 lakh saved from son's wedding to Hyderabad students

On 24 June 2026, Hyderabad businessman and social worker Abdul Muqeet Chanda launched the 'Gift A Smile' education initiative, committing Rs 50 lakh to support the education of orphaned and meritorious students from economically weaker sections. The funding for the initiative was sourced entirely from savings accumulated by curtailing extravagant expenses during his elder son's wedding.

The Chanda family chose to scale back on unnecessary wedding expenditures, including lavish decorations and other avoidable costs, to channel the resources into a meaningful social cause. The initiative aims to ensure that financial hardships do not stand in the way of academic pursuits for talented young students in the city.

In collaboration with the Sir Syed Society, Muqeet Chanda and his team are actively identifying academically bright students currently studying in government institutions. Special emphasis is being placed on supporting orphaned children and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through this programme, the initiative will bear the annual tuition fees of the selected students for one academic year.

To further extend the impact of the Rs 50 lakh fund, several educational institutions have agreed to offer a 50 per cent concession on tuition fees. This concession was secured following a formal appeal made by the Sir Syed Society, allowing the initiative to support a larger number of students.

According to the organizers, the primary objective of 'Gift A Smile' is to empower talented students, enabling them to continue their education and pursue their future aspirations with confidence.

Speaking on the launch, Abdul Muqeet Chanda stated that a wedding is a moment of joy for a family, and they felt it was important to share that happiness with those who need support the most. He noted that education is the most powerful tool to transform lives and expressed hope that the initiative would help talented students achieve their dreams.
