97 Percent of Telangana Government Nurses Demand Modern Scrub Uniforms

HYDERABAD — A statewide online survey conducted by the Telangana Nurses Association (TNA) has revealed that 97.7 percent of government nursing officers support revising their current uniform dress code to modern scrub uniforms. Following the results of the survey, the association is now urging the state government to amend its existing guidelines to implement a more comfortable and gender-inclusive dress code.

According to the survey details released by the association, a total of 2,576 nursing officers voted in favor of revising the uniform dress code. In contrast, only 61 nursing officers, representing 2.3 percent of the participants, expressed a preference to retain the current uniform pattern.

The TNA stated that the younger generation of nursing officers strongly believes they deserve a professional, comfortable, and internationally accepted uniform. Many officers compared their desired attire to the modern scrub uniforms currently used in private corporate hospitals. The association noted that adopting modern scrubs would reflect a higher standard of professionalism, improve daily physical comfort during long shifts, and better align with contemporary healthcare practices.

Currently, the dress code for government nursing staff in the state is governed by Government Order (GO) Ms. No. 12, which was issued over a decade ago on January 11, 2011. The TNA pointed out that this outdated order primarily focuses on prescribing the uniform dress code for female nursing staff.

Furthermore, the 2011 order does not provide clear guidelines regarding the uniform dress code for male nursing officers. This lack of clarity directly impacts approximately 1,500 male nursing officers who are currently employed in various government healthcare institutions across Telangana.

To resolve these issues, the TNA has officially called upon the state government to amend GO Ms. No. 12. The association is demanding the implementation of a modern, gender-inclusive scrub uniform dress code that establishes clear, standardized guidelines for all government nursing officers, regardless of gender.
