78 Telangana Inmates Pass Class X Exams, Awarded Special Remission

Seventy-eight inmates housed in Telangana facilities, including Central Prison in Cherlapalli, Central Prison in Nizamabad, and the Special Prison for Women in Hyderabad, have successfully passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Class X examination through the National Institute of Open Schooling. Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Soumya Mishra distributed educational certificates to the successful candidates and announced special Director General’s Remission as an incentive for their academic achievement.

The educational initiative was conducted under a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Telangana Prisons Department and the National Institute of Open Schooling. A total of 108 prisoners had initially enrolled in the Class X academic programme. To prepare for the board examinations, the enrolled inmates underwent a year-long curriculum featuring regular academic classes, mock tests, and pre-board examinations.

Throughout their academic preparation, the inmate students received dedicated instructional support from both government and private school teachers. The structured academic training yielded 78 successful candidates across the three participating correctional facilities in the state.

Among those who cleared the Class X examinations, the majority were from Central Prison at Cherlapalli, which accounted for 56 successful candidates. Central Prison in Nizamabad recorded 15 successful inmates, while seven successful candidates passed the examination from the Special Prison for Women in Hyderabad.

Following the results, Director General Soumya Mishra stated that the prisons department will now actively encourage the successful candidates to pursue Senior Secondary education through the open schooling system.

Upon completing their 10+2 education, inmates will be eligible for higher education and skill development opportunities. They can pursue Bachelor of Arts degree programmes through the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University Study Centre located inside Cherlapalli prison, or enrol in trade courses at the industrial training institute established at Cherlapalli.

The prisons department highlighted a growing interest in continuing education among prisoners across state facilities, noting that a new batch of 47 inmates has already enrolled to pursue Class X education.
