22-year-old POCSO accused escapes Mahbubnagar jail, attempts suicide

A 22-year-old inmate lodged in the Mahbubnagar jail as an accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act escaped from custody early on Monday morning, only to allegedly attempt suicide a few hours later. The young man is currently undergoing medical treatment at the Mahabubnagar General Hospital, where officials have confirmed that his condition remains stable.

According to the Mahbubnagar town police, the incident began at around 5:00 AM on Monday. The inmate had gone to the prison washroom, where he allegedly used towels to escape through a window and successfully fled from the jail premises.

After prison officials detected the escape, jail authorities immediately raised an alarm. The superintendent of the prison then proceeded to lodge an official complaint with the Mahbubnagar town police at approximately 8:00 AM.

In response to the complaint, local police teams immediately launched a search operation in the region to trace and locate the escaped prisoner.

At around 5:00 PM, while the police search was still actively underway, authorities received information from the Mahabubnagar General Hospital that the escaped inmate had been admitted to the facility.

Mahbubnagar town Sub-Inspector Seenaiah stated that the 22-year-old had taken the extreme step near his house. His father discovered him and immediately transported him to the hospital for treatment.

The inmate was originally facing charges under the POCSO Act in a case registered at the Amarchinta police station, which is located in the neighbouring Wanaparthy district.

Following the escape, the Mahbubnagar town police have registered a new case regarding the incident, and a formal investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances of the escape.
