13-year-old boy survives fifth-floor fall after surgeries in Banjara Hills

A 13-year-old boy has successfully recovered from critical, life-threatening injuries after falling from the fifth floor of a building, following five weeks of intensive treatment at Rainbow Children’s Hospital in Banjara Hills. The teenager survived a highly fatal combination of injuries, including a torn thoracic aorta, severe brain trauma, multi-organ failure, and multiple fractures sustained during the accidental fall.

Immediately after the fall, the child was first taken to a nearby hospital. He was then shifted to the Rainbow Children’s Hospital facility located in Kukatpally, and was later transferred to the Banjara Hills facility, where a multi-specialty medical team provided his intensive care.

Diagnostic tests conducted at the hospital revealed the severe extent of the boy's trauma. Doctors identified a 7 cm type 3 traumatic injury to the thoracic aorta, which is a critical tear in the main blood vessel of the heart. The fall also caused a severe head injury, a pancreatic injury, trauma to both lungs, blood in the abdomen, and a fractured femur.

To save his life, the medical team performed an emergency endovascular aortic grafting to address the tear in the aorta of the heart. The doctors also successfully operated on him to fix his fractured thigh bone.

In addition to these complex surgeries, the boy required extensive organ support therapies to survive. The medical team provided supportive care in the form of mechanical ventilation, continuous dialysis, medications to maintain his blood pressure, and blood products support.

During the first few days of his hospital stay, the child was in a coma secondary to the severe brain injury. He eventually started recovering from the coma, and after 34 days, he was removed from the ventilator. He was discharged for rehabilitation after five weeks.
